The shores of beautiful White Rock Lake, the crown jewel of the area’s in-town waterways, represent Dallas’s past, present and future. The site of elegant homes in lush surroundings, majestically overlooking colorful sailboats navigating dancing waters. It’s also the site of portions of one of the most popular marathons in Texas each year, as well as weddings and social gatherings. The area is teeming with a deep history, one that helped change the tone of the entire region. It began with a momentous move in 1880 when the City of Dallas elected to annex the larger area of East Dallas. That one civic modification paved the way for Dallas to earn its current position as the ninth most populous city in the United States. Today, it also means that Dallas can claim the entire area’s active nightlife and signature landmarks in these two popular areas. Located on the eastern edge of Downtown Dallas is Deep Ellum, which is recognized as one of the nation’s most important basins of blues and roots music.

It was here that legends such as Robert Johnson, Leadbelly and Blind Lemon Jefferson played and recorded some of the most important versions of American music. Contemporary stars, such as Dallas native Edie Brickell and British bluesman Eric Clapton, have performed and recorded here. The club scene as well as casual restaurants such as Pecan Lodge, St. Pete’s Dancing Marlin and Cane Rosso are casual favorites before and after concerts. Beyond the nightlife destinations and restaurants, the area’s neighborhoods feature plenty of signature landmarks. Fair Park, home of the State Fair of Texas, and the largest collection of art deco structures at any one place in the world is in East Dallas. Nearby, residents and visitors flock to Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden on White Rock Lake, which cultivates the most beautiful gardens in the region and stages special exhibits and events throughout the year.

Special Christmas exhibitions, a lovely summer concert series, known as Cool Thursdays, and the annual Dallas Blooms, which Fodor’s Travel has named one of America's best spring floral festivals, all attract loyal audiences. White Rock Lake is also easily accessible and features plenty of jogging, biking and walking trails, as well as an idyllic location for a family day trip or romantic afternoon stroll.

The Lakewood Country Club was built in 1912 featuring Dallas’s second 18-hole golf course. It remains a mainstay in the area with various activities throughout the year. Nearby is the venerable Lakewood Theater, built in 1938, and converted into a trendy bowling alley known as Bowlski’s in 2019. East Dallas and Lakewood neighborhoods fall south of East Mockingbird until the intersection of North Central Expressway (U.S. 75) and Interstate 30, and as far east as Garland Road.

There is no typical resident of East Dallas and Lakewood because the area includes so many styles and interesting facets -- hot restaurants, independent shops, proximity to downtown and schools within Dallas Independent School District, which caters to families and single professionals alike. Woodrow Wilson High School, one of Dallas’s oldest, boasts a who’s who of graduates including Heisman Trophy winners Davey O’Brien and Tim Brown. As far as private schools, there is Lakewood Prep (K-12), and Bishop Lynch High School in the area, considered among the top Catholic educations in Dallas Neighborhoods within the area to consider include Junius Heights, Munger Place Historic District, Swiss Avenue and Vickery Place.
